Join us in celebrating our 79th birthday and the life of Nancy Kim who owned and operated the Gardena Cinema from 1976 through 2022 when she passed away after a six-year battle with cancer. Her all-time favorite movie was FACE/OFF and we intend to show it every year in celebration of Nancy's love for the movies, especially those starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage. Directed by John Woo, FACE/OFF is about an FBI agent who undergoes a facial transplant surgery and assumes the identity and physical appearance of a terrorist, in order to foil an extortion plot. But the plan turns from bad to worse when the same terrorist impersonates the FBI agent. This event includes birthday cake and a Hawaiian-themed buffet style meal. Every ticketholder will receive a complimentary small bag of popcorn and commemorative swag. Come hungry. Gardena Cinema opened as the Park Theatre on December 11, 1946.

PICTURE BRIDE is a 1995 American Japanese-language feature-length independent film directed by Kayo Hatta from a screenplay co-written with Mari Hatta, and co-produced by Diane Mei Lin Mark and Lisa Onodera. It follows Riyo, who arrives in Hawaii as a "picture bride" at the turn of the century for a man she has never met before. The story is based on the historical practice, due to U.S. anti-miscegenation laws, of Japanese immigrant laborers in the United States using long-distance matchmakers in their homelands to find wives. Released by Miramax Films, the film stars Youki Kudoh, Akira Takayama, Tamlyn Tomita, and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, with a special appearance by Toshiro Mifune in his penultimate film role. Picture Bride premiered at the 1995 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award for narrative dramatic feature film. Considered a landmark Asian American work, the film was an Official Selection at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section and received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Feature.

NOSTALGIC NEBULA presents SLEEPAWAY CAMP with live commentary during the movie by star and actress FELISSA ROSE giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the production, hilarious anecdotes and cinema secrets. Stick around after the show for an opportunity to meet Felissa Rose, get autographs, grab some prints and other killer merch! One night only! SLEEPAWAY CAMP is a 1983 American slasher film written and directed by Robert Hiltzik, and starring Felissa Rose, Katherine Kamhi, Paul DeAngelo, Mike Kellin (in his last screen appearance), and Christopher Collet (in his first). It is the first film in the Sleepaway Camp film series, and focuses on a series of murders occurring in a youth summer camp. Filmed in upstate New York in the fall of 1982, Sleepaway Camp was released the following year by United Film Distributors. It earned approximately $11 million at the box office, but was met by largely unfavorable reviews from critics, many of whom deemed it exploitative and derivative of such films as Friday the 13th (1980). In the years since its release, Sleepaway Camp has gone on to develop a cult following, as well as garnering notoriety for its twist ending, which is considered one of the most shocking in the horror genre and in film history at large. The film has also been subject to diverging criticism from modern reviewers regarding its themes of gender identity. It was followed by four sequels: Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988), Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989), Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor (2012), and Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008).
