Where Were You in 1976? A Look Back at Bicentennial Cinema: Nashville, 6:00 pm Bicentennial Pre-show by Deserted Films/ 6:30 pm Feature. October 15th Nashville Directed by Robert Altman Starring Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Keith Carradine, Geraldine Chaplin, Jeff Goldblum, Barbara Harris, etc. "Y'all take it easy now. This isn't Dallas, it's Nashville! They can't do this to us here in Nashville!" 24 main characters…two hours and thirty nine minutes…five days in 1975…so much red, white, and blue…and pretty much everything that was on America’s mind leading up to the bicentennial. Altman’s film is a perfect summary statement for our series. We love the award-winning song “I’m Easy” by Keith Carradine…and it’s just so much fun seeing almost everyone who was acting in the 1970s pass by the camera at some point! Robert Altman, man. This will make you want a Summer-full of Altman. ABOUT THE SERIES Where Were You in 1976? A look back at bicentennial cinema… The USA turns 250 years old this year. It’s a BIG birthday! So we’ve put together a series that looks back at our last big birthday…the bicentennial of 1976. Four “prime time” movies in the evenings and one VERY SPECIAL all-ages, FREE, family friendly matinee brought to you by the Palm Springs Public Library. It’s our birthday gift toPalm Springs and we can’t wait to see you! Deserted Films, the Palm Springs Public Library, and the Palm Springs Cultural Center have teamed up to bring you 5 key films to get us thinking about where we were when we hit 200. Deserted Films will present a special pre-show (6-6:30) before each feature… and we’ve got some spectacular bicentennial-era home movies and other goodies to share! Enjoy the PSCC AC! Meet interesting people! See things you can’t see on TV or anywhere else! And support a couple of filmy nonprofits that need your help in the Summer! Thursday, October 29th [NEW DATE] 6:30pm Network (1976, Sidney Lumet) 6pm Bicentennial pre-show by Deserted Films We’re excited as hell, and you don’t have to wait anymore! Network was the first film we programmed when we teamed up with the Palm Springs Public Library to plan our Summer Semiquincentennial film series back in January. But the studio held it back for a big restoration, so now it’ll be the last in the series! Come see Sidney Lumet’s Network on the Camelot’s BIG screen, just in time for the 2026 election season! Aside from its darkly satirical tone (you will laugh and despair simultaneously!), everyone and everything in Sidney Lumet’s landmark film is so finely tuned, so pressurized, so tapped into the nation’s increasing and destabilizing anxiety, that you’ll leave the Palm Springs Cultural Center feeling a little exhausted (but in a good way!). That was kind of Lumet’s thing! And believe us, the effect is more profound on the BIG SCREEN!!! We programmed 12 Angry Men a couple of summers ago and realized with the crowd that Lumet's worlds become something else entirely when viewed theatrically. Of course the message here is even more relevant in 2026. Paddy Chayefsky’s award winning screenplay is perfect. Epic performances by Faye Dunaway, Peter Finch, William Holden, Ned Beatty, and Robert Duvall don’t hurt! It’s a special Fall add-on to our Summer series and we hope to see you there.
